Avishai Cohen Brightlight

Internationally renowned bassist/composer/singer Avishai Cohen’s musical journey has been one of unwavering dedication, ceaseless innovation and global acclaim. From his formative years to his current international jazz icon status Cohen’s artistry has transcended borders and captivated audiences worldwide. His virtuosity on the upright bass is unparalleled, marked by a deep, resonant tone and an intuitive sense of rhythm that forms the heartbeat of his music.

As a composer Cohen has a rare gift for crafting melodies that are at once intricate and accessible, weaving together elements of jazz, folk and world music into a tapestry of sonic beauty. His compositions are imbued with a sense of narrative depth, each telling a story that resonates with listeners on a profound emotional level.

In his new recording, Brightlight, Cohen showcases his multifaceted talents alongside a stellar ensemble of musicians including his core trio – pianist Guy Moskovich and drummer Roni Kaspi. Kaspi brings a youthful vigour to the album, infusing the music with a sense of spontaneity and drive. After more than three years of touring with Cohen, she’s even got a dedicated title on this recording (‘Roni’s Swing’), written by Cohen as a homage to her dynamic and energetic drumming. Guy Moskovich, a pianist whose harmonic sensibilities and technical prowess have garnered him recognition as a rising star in jazz, provides the perfect complement to Cohen’s bass lines. Saxophonist, Yuval Drabkin, adds another layer of richness to the extensive ensemble. His emotive playing and nuanced interpretations bring a compelling voice to the project, enhancing the album’s overall depth and complexity.

Brightlight is a testament to Cohen’s eclecticism as an artist, featuring a diverse array of original compositions, jazz standards and one vocal track, the classic ‘Summertime’. From the haunting beauty of classical jazz standards to the fiery improvisations on original compositions, the album is a showcase of Cohen’s boundless creativity and artistic vision. Cohen continues to push the boundaries of jazz, exploring new sonic landscapes while staying true to the tradition that has always inspired him.
